Mississippian Age Fossils in NW Alabama

Writer's picture: Jim BraswellJim Braswell

For our December trip, we collected fossils in the Mississippian rocks of NW Alabama in Bangor limestone exposures. After watching the weather forecast for rain jumping all around, we were able to go ahead with the field trip at the last minute. This resulted in a relatively small group, but a great day was had by those that did come. This area always yields wonderful marine fossils. We had a cool and cloudy day but very nice for December. Plenty of great fossils were found. Below are some of the fossils that were discovered on this day.

Corals

Hash Plates (featuring Brachiopods, Coral, Gastropod, and Trilobits from left to right)

Trace Fossils

"Shark" Teeth

It was another great day looking for fossils! We look forward to see everyone at the our meetings or on our next trip.
